Bratislava has been given a spring clean – or should that be a summer clean – after 2,000 volunteers from 40 different companies and non-profit organisations took part in the third ‘Our Bratislava’ event.
The volunteers worked on litter picking and clearing the Mountain Park and the grounds of Devin Castle, repairing children’s playgrounds, painting fences and planting flowers in shrubs in areas where they can be enjoyed by all. Some popular Slovakian celebrities also mucked in to brighten up the city, among them actor Táňa Pauhofová, TV personalities Alena Heribanová and Katarína Brychtová, and the news co-anchors Jarka Hargašová-Lajčáková and Ľubomír Bajaník.
Organised by the The Pontis Foundation, the initiative mirrors other projects in cities like New York where thousands of people volunteer to clean up parts of their town.
Monika Smolová, the Pontis Foundation coordinator, said that the number of volunteers had tripled this year and that the event had been very successful.
